In New Mexico, “Earthship” homes work to be built with 100% recycled and natural materials. In particular — sitting off of Highway 64 in Taos, NM — this Earthship utilizes over 500 recycled tires, aluminum cans, and bottles packed with dirt. Add some natural mud as plaster, and you have a liveable home.
As part of the home’s walls, aluminum cans, glass bottles and old tires act as insulation. The Earthship uses no wood or brick and mortar. Just junk, and soil.
Coupled with the sustainability that comes with using only recycled and natural materials for building, this Earthship also acts as its own water filter. Water lands on the home’s roof, before falling down through a homemade filter to be used however residents see fit.
